City Centre or Desert Road: Where to Base Yourself

Jaisalmer accommodation divides between the old city, the newer town, the Sam road, and the dunes themselves. Each suits a different trip. The old city gives walkable heritage and rooftop fort views but narrow access and limited parking. The Sam road gives space, quiet, cleaner air, darker night skies and a shorter drive to the dunes, at the cost of needing a vehicle for the fort and haveli lanes. Travellers whose Jaisalmer is mostly about the desert — safaris, the border circuit, photography, stargazing — often find the Sam side the better base.

The Desert Circuit From Here

Being west of town puts the day's best stops in sequence. Bada Bagh's royal cenotaphs work at sunrise or sunset. Kuldhara, the Paliwal village abandoned overnight in the early 1800s and wrapped in the legend of a curse, sits closer from here than from the city. The Jaisalmer War Museum, established by the Army in 2015 with tanks, artillery and a Hunter aircraft, is minutes away. Then the Sam Sand Dunes themselves, where the camel safari, folk evening and camp dinner form the classic desert night.

Adding the Border Day

For travellers with an extra day, the Longewala and Tanot circuit is Jaisalmer's most affecting excursion. Longewala, 120 km northwest, is where roughly 120 soldiers of the Punjab Regiment under Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri held off an armoured assault through the night of 4–5 December 1971, with Hunter aircraft from Jaisalmer completing the rout at dawn. Tanot Mata Temple, 40 km further, is maintained by the BSF and famous for the shells that fell around it in 1965 and 1971 without exploding — defused shells sit in a glass case inside. Stargazing and the New Night Tourism

Jaisalmer's night sky is among India's clearest, and recent years have seen a deliberate push into night tourism — stargazing safaris, telescope sessions and midnight dune walks — partly to make the destination viable in summer when daytime heat crosses 45°C. Away from city lights, the Milky Way is visible on clear moonless nights. Groups, Families and Events

Open lawns change what a property can host. Family gatherings, small functions, group dinners and folk evenings all work outdoors here, and children have room to move — a real consideration on a trip otherwise spent in vehicles and monuments. For tour groups, the combination of large-vehicle parking, buffet-capable dining and a shorter dune transfer removes the two most common group-travel frustrations: parking and timing.

Season, Weather and What to Pack

October to March, with November to February optimal. Desert-side nights run colder than the city — pack a proper jacket for December and January, when temperatures can approach 5°C. Daytime calls for sunscreen, sunglasses and a scarf against blowing sand, plus closed shoes for dune walking. Summer visits are now possible with year-round flight access, but should be structured around dawn and after dark, with air-conditioned transport throughout.
