The classic Sam experience follows the light. Arrive by 4:30 PM, take a sunset camel safari (₹300–₹1,000) or a 4x4 jeep safari (₹1,500–₹2,500 per jeep, seats 5–6), and watch the dunes shift from gold to orange to deep crimson. As dusk falls, dozens of desert camps along the Sam strip come alive with bonfires, Manganiyar folk songs, Kalbeliya dance and Rajasthani buffet dinners — an overnight desert camp stay here, in anything from budget tents to air-conditioned luxury Swiss suites, is the single most recommended experience in Jaisalmer. Adventure add-ons include quad biking, paramotoring and, on clear nights, some of India's finest stargazing thanks to near-zero light pollution.
Come at sunrise instead and you'll have the dunes almost to yourself — cool sand, untouched ripples and soft pink light, the photographer's hour. History
For centuries these dunes lay on the caravan roads that made Jaisalmer rich — camel trains hauling silk, spices, opium and indigo between India and Central Asia rested at wells and villages along this belt. The name comes from Sam village nearby. When overland trade died, the dunes returned to silence, broken only by herders — until Rajasthan's tourism boom of recent decades transformed Sam into the state's desert showpiece. The annual Desert Festival (Maru Mahotsav) each January–February now stages camel races and open-air concerts on these very slopes, and the new wave of night tourism — stargazing safaris and midnight dune walks — is writing Sam's next chapter.
