Rather than chasing the highest star rating, work backwards from your itinerary. If you plan to visit the fort at dawn and photograph the lanes, stay in the old city and accept narrow access and stairs. If you're travelling with elderly parents or small children and want lift access, parking and dependable air-conditioning, a modern city hotel serves better. If your priority is the desert, spend fewer nights in the city and more at the dunes.

At the ₹2,500–₹7,000 band in Jaisalmer, a few things should be non-negotiable: air-conditioning that actually cools a sandstone room in March, hot water in the morning without a phone call, clean linen changed properly, WiFi that works, and 24-hour reception given the city's odd train timings. Anything beyond that — rooftop views, heritage décor, a pool — is a bonus rather than a baseline. The Standard Jaisalmer Itinerary, Explained

Day 1: Arrive, rest, and use the late afternoon for Jaisalmer Fort's golden hour, followed by dinner.

October to March. November and February are the most comfortable months overall. December and January bring beautiful days but genuinely cold desert nights near 5°C. Late January or early February brings the Desert Festival — camel races, folk concerts, turban-tying contests — and full occupancy across the city. April to June crosses 45°C and most camps close, though the city now has year-round flight access and a growing night-tourism scene built around stargazing and evening dune visits.
