Planning a Family Trip to Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer works remarkably well with children, provided the itinerary respects the climate and the pace. The city's headline attractions are visual and physical rather than academic — a fort you walk through rather than read about, a lake with boats, a museum with real tanks, and camels. What tires families is the middle of the day: from roughly noon to 3:30 PM, even in winter, the sun is punishing on open sandstone. Build the day around that gap and everyone stays cheerful.

A Family-Friendly Three-Day Plan

Day 1 — Arrival and easy start. Check in, rest, then head to Gadisar Lake in the late afternoon for a paddle-boat ride and the catfish feeding that children invariably love. Dinner on the rooftop.
Day 2 — Fort morning, museum afternoon. Reach Jaisalmer Fort by 9 AM before the heat and crowds; the winding lanes, Jain temples and rampart views hold most kids' attention for a couple of hours. Rest through midday. Late afternoon, visit the Jaisalmer War Museum on the Sam road — tanks, artillery and a Hunter aircraft parked outside make it the surprise favourite of most family trips.
Day 3 — Desert day. Head out toward the Sam Sand Dunes with a stop at Bada Bagh for photographs. Arrive at camp by late afternoon for a short camel ride, the bonfire folk performance and dinner. Children usually rate this the best night of the trip.

Choosing Between a City Hotel and a Desert Camp

Families frequently ask whether to skip the city hotel and stay only at a camp, or vice versa. The honest answer is that each does something the other can't. A city hotel offers air-conditioning through the afternoon, reliable hot water for baths, laundry, a doctor within minutes if needed, and a restaurant open at odd hours — all things that matter with small children or elderly parents. A desert camp offers the experience nobody forgets. Two nights in the city and one at the dunes is the structure that works for most families, as in our family tour package.

Practical Notes for Travelling With Children

Hydration matters more than anything — the dry air dehydrates people faster than the temperature suggests. Carry sunscreen and hats, and remember that winter nights at the dunes can approach 5°C, so pack proper warm layers even if the afternoon felt hot. On camel rides, one adult riding with a young child is standard practice, and camps can substitute a jeep ride for anyone uncomfortable. For elderly travellers, ask about lifts, ground-floor rooms and jeep transfer to the sunset point instead of the camel.

Getting to Jaisalmer

Most families arrive by train — direct services connect Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur, with many arriving early morning. Flights operate to Jaisalmer Airport (JSA) with year-round connectivity now available via Jaipur. If you're driving, Jodhpur is roughly 5–6 hours away and Bikaner about 6 hours, both on decent highways with regular stops.

When to Come

October through March, without question. November and February are the sweet spots for families — warm enough for comfortable days, cool enough for the desert night, and without the extreme December cold or the New Year crowds and pricing. If your children are school-age and you're tied to holidays, book December dates at least six weeks out.
