Longewala is hallowed ground. On the night of 4–5 December 1971, a company of roughly 120 men of the 23rd Battalion, Punjab Regiment, led by Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, faced a massive Pakistani armoured assault at this remote border post — and held. Through the night they stood their ground against tanks and infantry vastly outnumbering them; at dawn, IAF Hunter aircraft from Jaisalmer turned the desert into a graveyard of armour. The Battle of Longewala became one of the most celebrated defensive actions in Indian military history, later immortalised in the film 'Border.'

Today the battlefield is a moving open-air memorial 120 km from Jaisalmer along a spectacular desert highway. Walk among captured Pakistani tanks, artillery pieces and the preserved bunkers and trenches of the original post; a memorial pillar honours the defenders, and a small museum with photographs, maps and an audio-visual presentation reconstructs the night hour by hour. Serving and retired soldiers often visit, and conversations with them can be the most powerful part of the experience.

The journey pairs naturally with Tanot Mata Temple, 40 km further, famed for the shells that fell around it and never exploded — together they form Jaisalmer's unforgettable border-tourism day. History

The 1971 India-Pakistan War's western front saw Pakistan attempt a thrust toward Jaisalmer through the lightly held Longewala post. Intelligence of the advance reached Major Chandpuri's company late on 4 December; declining withdrawal, the post fought through the night with a single recoilless rifle among its heavy weapons, aided by a minefield partly imagined by the attackers. At first light, Hunter aircraft flying from Jaisalmer destroyed dozens of tanks and vehicles trapped in soft sand. Major Chandpuri received the Maha Vir Chakra, and Longewala entered military textbooks worldwide as a study in defence against armour.
