About Lakhmana Desert Camp

Experience the real desert life

Lakhmana Desert Camp offers what a growing number of travellers now ask for: the desert without the queue. Set on the Lakhmana dune belt near Sam, the camp keeps the full programme — camel safari, bonfire, folk performance, Rajasthani dinner, sunrise over untouched sand — while sitting away from the busiest strip, where dozens of camps and hundreds of jeeps converge each evening in peak season. Stays are arranged through Shrinath Adventures.

Tents are Swiss-style with attached washrooms and hot water, and the scale is deliberately small, which changes the evening entirely: the folk performance happens close enough to see the musicians' hands, and the silence after dinner is real silence.

Why the Location Matters

At Sam's main dune belt in December, sunset can mean several hundred people on the same ridge. It's atmospheric in its own way — chai sellers, musicians, camels in every direction — but it isn't solitude. Lakhmana gives you dunes where your footprints are the only ones, which matters enormously for photographers, honeymooners and anyone whose mental image of the Thar involves emptiness.

Stargazing at Lakhmana

Distance from camp lights makes a measurable difference to what you can see overhead. On clear moonless nights between October and March, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye here, along with satellites, meteors and — with a basic tripod — the star trails that make desert astrophotography worth the cold. Avoid full-moon dates if the night sky is your priority. Our stargazing and night safari package is built around exactly these conditions.

The Evening Programme

Arrival from 3:30 PM, welcome tea, then the sunset camel safari onto quiet ridgelines. Back at camp, the bonfire is lit and Manganiyar musicians perform — the repertoire spans devotional songs, ballads and celebration pieces on kamaicha, khartal and dholak. Dinner is a Rajasthani buffet with veg and Jain options. Then, mostly, people stop talking and look up.

Practical Notes

Bring a proper jacket: December and January nights near the open dunes can approach 5°C, and Lakhmana's exposure makes it feel colder than the city. Carry a power bank, as electricity may run on limited hours. Closed shoes are better than sandals for dune walking after dark. And book ahead for the Desert Festival window in late January or February, when even the quieter camps fill.

  • Exceptional stargazing with minimal light pollution
  • Intimate folk performances, not mass shows

I was looking for a desert camp that was family friendly, not overcrowded and that serves good non-veg dinner. This was difficult to infer from the internet. I resorted to offline validation of this property through hotels whom I found to be using this desert camp for the guests. And Aditya didn't disappoint us. I am glad we chose this camp.

I absolutely loved my stay at Lakmana Desert Camping in Sam. From the moment we arrived, everything was well organized and welcoming. The location is perfect—right in the middle of the beautiful sand dunes, giving a truly authentic desert vibe. All the activities were amazing, especially the camel safari, jeep safari, sunset views, and cultural evening with folk dance and music. The atmosphere at night was magical under the stars. ✨ The tents were clean, comfortable, and well maintained, and the food was delicious with good variety. The staff was very polite, helpful, and friendly, making the entire experience smooth and memorable. This place is perfect for friends, couples, or families who want to enjoy the real charm of the Thar Desert. Highly recommended! Would definitely love to visit again. 🌵🏜️

Tents are good but required some maintenance. Evening time no hot water. Foods are OK nothing special. Staffs are helpful with their limitations. Bed is good, tent is spacious, toilet is big but locking system from inside of the tent. Location is little outside from other resorts. Required some signage to locate the property at night. Wellcoming is proper Rajasthani style. Overall good but scope of improvements. Inside tent lighting need to increase.
