Where Sam's strip buzzes with jeeps and tour buses in peak season, Khuri's evenings still belong to village sounds: goat bells, folk songs, the crackle of cooking fires.
The village itself is half the experience. Khuri's traditional mud-and-thatch houses, decorated with white geometric patterns painted by hand, showcase desert life that has changed little in generations. Many camps here are family-run, and homestay-style hospitality is common — expect home-cooked ker sangri and bajra rotis rather than banquet buffets, and camel men who take you to dunes where yours are the only footprints.
Choose Khuri over Sam if you value silence, authenticity and gentler prices; choose Sam if you want taller showcase dunes, more activity options (quad biking, paramotoring) and a livelier cultural-evening scene. Ambitious itineraries can do both — Sam for the sunset spectacle one day, Khuri for a soulful overnight the next. Either way, book desert camps in advance for December and festival weeks, and carry warm layers: winter desert nights at Khuri drop as sharply as anywhere in the Thar.
History
Khuri grew as a settlement of the Sodha Rajputs and pastoral communities along the caravan fringes of the Jaisalmer state, its families herding camels, goats and sheep across the dune belt for centuries. Its painted mud homes represent vernacular desert architecture at its most refined — thick insulating walls, small windows, courtyards designed for shade and wind. Tourism arrived decades after Sam's boom, led by village families opening small camps rather than outside operators — which is precisely why Khuri retains the texture of a living desert village rather than a resort strip.
