Sam Isn't One Camp — It's a Whole Stretch of Desert

Sam Sand Dunes covers several kilometres of desert, not a single spot — some camps sit right against the tallest dunes near the main sunset viewpoint (busier, most scenic), while others are set back a short drive away (quieter, still with dune access). Knowing this before you book avoids surprises about noise, crowd size and walking distance to the sand.

  • Main dune belt: tallest dunes, busiest sunset crowds
  • Set-back camps: shorter walk, quieter evenings
  • Most camps offer a jeep transfer to the dune edge
  • Camel safari routes vary slightly by camp location
  • We match you to a camp based on what you actually want

We Know Every Corner of Sam

Sam Sand Dunes camps are located roughly 40 km (about a one-hour drive) from Jaisalmer city, spread across several kilometres of desert rather than clustered in one place — where exactly your camp sits within that stretch affects your sunset crowd size, walking distance to the sand, and how quiet your night will be.

How the Sam Dune Area Is Actually Laid Out

The main public sunset viewpoint at Sam draws the largest crowds — jeeps, camel strings and day-trip tourist buses converge here every evening around 5–6 PM. Most established camps, including our partner properties, sit either directly adjacent to this main dune belt or a short 5–10 minute jeep ride further into quieter dunes. Both setups include camel access; the difference is purely about how many other visitors you'll share your sunset photo with.

Main Dune Belt vs Set-Back Camps

Location TypeProsTrade-off
Main dune beltTallest dunes, iconic photo spot, short walkBusier evening crowds
Set-back campsQuieter, more private sunsetShort jeep transfer needed

If total quiet matters more than the tallest dunes, you may prefer Khuri instead, 48 km from the city and noticeably less crowded than Sam year-round.

Which Camps Sit Where

Among the camps we work with, some prioritise proximity to the main viewpoint while others deliberately sit further back for privacy — tell us whether you want the classic crowded-sunset postcard shot or a quieter evening, and we'll match your dates to the right location rather than just the first available tent.

Getting to and Around Sam

From Jaisalmer, it's a straightforward one-hour drive by road; most camps include pickup in their package or can arrange it via our taxi service. Once you're at camp, transfers to the dune edge for your camel or jeep safari are typically included, whether your tent is right at the main belt or a few minutes further out.

Best Time of Day to Arrive

Aim to check in by 3:30–4 PM so you have time to settle before the sunset safari departs around 5 PM in winter (earlier in the shorter December days, later in October). Arriving later means rushing straight into the safari without a break — not ideal after a long drive.

Booking the Right Location for You

Rather than booking blind through a listing site, message us your priorities — tallest dunes, quietest night, or shortest walk — and we'll recommend a specific camp within the Sam belt that matches, based on stays we've personally checked.
