Experience the real desert life
Thar Resort is the desert without compromise. Air-conditioned Swiss suites with proper king beds, en-suite bathrooms with hot rain showers, private verandahs facing open sand, and a dining operation that runs closer to a hotel than a camp — all while keeping the elements that make a desert night worth having: the sunset camel safari, the bonfire, the folk musicians and a sky uninterrupted by city light. Reservations through Shrinath Adventures.
Located near the Sam Sand Dunes about 40 km from Jaisalmer, the resort keeps its tent count deliberately limited, which shows in the service: dedicated tent attendants, turndown service, and the ability to arrange a private candlelight dinner on a secluded dune with your own chef and server.
What Makes a Camp "Luxury" — Honestly
The word is used loosely at Sam, so here is the practical checklist that separates the tiers:
| Feature | Standard camp | Luxury camp |
|---|---|---|
| Tent size | 100–140 sq.ft | 200–400 sq.ft |
| Air-conditioning | Usually not | Yes, plus heating |
| Bathroom | Attached, basic | En-suite, rain shower, 24hr hot water |
| Bedding | Standard | Quality mattress and linen |
| Dining | Shared buffet | Buffet plus private dining options |
| Service | Shared staff | Dedicated attendants |
Worth knowing: the experience — the sunset, the music, the stars — is identical across every tier at Sam. What you pay more for is comfort, not access. That honesty matters when choosing; our luxury desert camp guide breaks down the full comparison.
The Private Dune Dinner
The signature experience here is dinner served away from the camp entirely: a table set on a private dune, torches planted in a circle, your own chef and server, and nothing beyond the light but stars and silence. It's the reason most honeymooners book Thar Resort, and it needs 24 hours' notice — typically ₹4,000–₹8,000 per couple, confirmed at the time of booking.
Ideal For
Honeymooners and anniversary couples, older travellers who want the desert without roughing it, international guests unused to Indian winter nights in canvas, and anyone treating this as the centrepiece night of a Rajasthan trip. Our luxury glamping escape package and honeymoon package both use camps at this level.
Season and Practicalities
October to March. November to February is the sweet spot — 22–27°C days, cold clear nights when the heating in an AC tent earns its keep. Early October and March can still run warm in the afternoon, which is precisely when air-conditioning stops being a luxury. Camps at Sam, including this one, generally close April to June when temperatures cross 45°C.
Book peak dates — the Christmas–New Year fortnight and the Desert Festival window — at least six weeks ahead. Luxury camps have few tents, and they go first.
