Places to Visit in Jaisalmer — The Complete List
From the living Jaisalmer Fort to the border temple at Tanot Mata, here's every place worth building into your Jaisalmer itinerary, with real distances and visiting notes.
Every Place, Grouped by How Far It Is
Some of Jaisalmer's best sights are a short walk within the fort, others are a short drive across the city, and a few (Longewala, Tanot Mata) require a full-day expedition. Grouping them this way makes it much easier to plan a realistic itinerary.
- In-city sights: Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, Gadisar Lake
- Short drive (10–20 km): Bada Bagh, Desert National Park edge
- Sam road (40 km): Sam Sand Dunes, Kuldhara, War Museum
- Full-day trip (120 km): Longewala, Tanot Mata Temple
- We can combine several into one efficient day

The essential places to visit in Jaisalmer span the living Jaisalmer Fort and Patwon Ki Haveli within the city, Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh a short drive away, the Sam Sand Dunes and Kuldhara ghost village 40 km out, and the Longewala War Memorial and Tanot Mata Temple roughly 120 km toward the border — realistically grouped into a 2–4 day itinerary rather than visited all in one rushed day.
In-City Sights (Walkable or Short Drive)
The Jaisalmer Fort is the city's centrepiece — a living fort still home to around 3,000 residents, unlike most Rajasthan forts which are now purely museums. Nearby, Patwon Ki Haveli showcases the carved sandstone facades of five havelis built by the wealthy Patwa merchant family. Gadisar Lake, ringed by temples and carved ghats, is best visited at sunset for boating.
A Short Drive From the City
| Place | Distance | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Bada Bagh | ~6 km | Royal cenotaphs, golden-hour photography |
| Jaisalmer War Museum | ~12 km | 1965 & 1971 war history, tanks and aircraft |
On the Way to Sam Sand Dunes (~40 km)
The Sam Sand Dunes are Jaisalmer's signature desert experience — camel safari, jeep dune-bashing and an overnight camp. En route, Kuldhara, a village abandoned overnight some 200 years ago, makes for an atmospheric stop. Khuri, a quieter alternative to Sam, sits a little further at 48 km.
A Full-Day Border Expedition (~120 km)
The Longewala War Memorial, site of the legendary 1971 battle, and the Tanot Mata Temple, revered for shells that never exploded during wartime shelling, sit near the international border and require a dedicated full day given the distance.
For Wildlife and Nature
The Desert National Park, home to the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, offers a different side of the Thar for travellers interested in desert ecology rather than just monuments.
How to Fit These Into a Trip
A 3-day trip comfortably covers the in-city sights, Bada Bagh, and a Sam Sand Dunes camp night with a Kuldhara stop en route. A 4-day trip adds the War Museum and, for those interested, the full-day border expedition. See our tour package guide for ready-made itineraries covering these combinations.
Best Time to Sightsee
October to March offers comfortable daytime temperatures for walking around the fort and havelis; outdoor sights like Bada Bagh and Gadisar Lake are best visited in the late afternoon for photography light and cooler air.

Have Questions? We're Here to Help
Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli, Gadisar Lake, Bada Bagh and the Sam Sand Dunes are the essentials most visitors prioritise.
In-city sights first, then Bada Bagh and the War Museum, then a Sam Sand Dunes camp night with a Kuldhara stop en route, works well for most 3–4 day trips.
