Staying Inside Jaisalmer's Old City

Jaisalmer's old city is the honeycomb of sandstone lanes spreading below the fort — a working neighbourhood of homes, temples, shops and havelis where the architecture is uniformly golden and the streets were built for camels, not cars. Staying here changes the texture of a trip. You wake to temple bells rather than traffic, walk to every major sight, and see the city in its unguarded hours — early morning when shopkeepers sweep their thresholds, and late evening when the fort is floodlit and the lanes empty.

The Trade-offs, Honestly

Old-city stays involve compromises worth knowing in advance. Lanes are narrow, so vehicles may not reach the door and parking is often a short walk away. Heritage buildings have steep staircases and rarely lifts. Rooms tend to be smaller than modern hotel rooms, and sound carries in stone buildings. In exchange you get location, character and views that no highway-side property can offer. Travellers who value atmosphere accept these readily; travellers with mobility limitations or heavy luggage may prefer a city hotel with lift access and parking.

The Haveli Trail on Foot

Jaisalmer's merchant mansions are its second great attraction after the fort, and they're best walked. Start at Patwon Ki Haveli, a cluster of five houses begun around 1805 by the trader Guman Chand Patwa, whose carved facades are the most elaborate in the city. Continue to Nathmal Ki Haveli, built in 1885 and famously carved by two brothers working from opposite ends — the two halves match in layout but differ in every detail, and the sculptors hid a bicycle and a steam engine in the stonework. Finish at Salim Singh Ki Haveli, its upper storey blossoming into 38 balconies shaped like a peacock, built by the prime minister whose tyranny drove the villagers of Kuldhara to abandon their homes overnight. Photographing the Golden City

Jaisalmer rewards photographers who work the edges of the day. The fort takes light best in the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset, when the sandstone shifts from honey to molten amber. Rooftops in the old city give elevation above the lanes; from a fort-facing terrace you can shoot the ramparts at blue hour when the floodlights come on and the sky still holds colour. Making It a Complete Jaisalmer Trip

The city and the desert are two different experiences, and the best itineraries include both. Two nights in a haveli covers the fort, havelis, Gadisar Lake and the sunset points at an unhurried pace. A third night at a Sam Sand Dunes camp adds the camel safari, the bonfire folk evening and a sky full of stars. Travellers seeking quieter sand choose Khuri, 48 km out, where family-run camps and village life replace the busier Sam strip.

Season and Booking

October to March is the window, with November to February offering the finest conditions. Boutique havelis have few rooms, so peak dates — the Christmas–New Year fortnight and the Desert Festival in late January or February — book out months in advance. When reserving, ask for photographs of the specific room rather than the property's best suite, confirm whether the room genuinely faces the fort, and clarify parking and staircase details if either matters to you.
